Criterion Games and EA have released the final patch for the racing game Need for Speed Heat, which also marks a milestone: With the update, the first EA title receives cross-play support. From now on, players can race together on PC, Playstation 4 and Xbox One.

Last update: Cross-Play for NFS Heat

Matt Webster, General Manager at Criterion Games, announced yesterday the final and final patch for Need for Speed Heat, the latest installment of Publisher EA’s popular racing game series. At the same time, this means that Criterion is now increasingly dedicated to the development of a successor, because the coming Need for Speed will also be developed by the makers of Burnout Paradise.

Over the course of today’s morning, EA has begun distributing the update, which allows cross-platform multiplayer (cross-play) on PC, Playstation 4 and Xbox One and thus all platforms operated by the game. Cross-play must first be activated via the game menu. Players from other platforms will then be shown in the Party menu under the new EA Friends tab. To play with them, they must have enabled cross-play. In the game, the platform it uses is displayed next to the player name. However, wraps and crews remain tied to the respective platform and are not comprehensive.

More details on the update and cross-play in NFS Heat EA has published on reddit.

More EA titles now on Steam

These days, EA is not only opening up to cross-platform gaming, but also in other ways: Recently, various EA titles including Need for Speed Heat are also available on Steam and thus no longer limited to Eas Origin Shop. Cross-Play in NFS Heat should work with both the Origin and Steam versions.

A further step to reach more players with the hitherto rather sluggish NFS offshoot is to follow on June 16. NFS Heat will then be added to EA Access and Origin Access (Basic) and will be available free of charge for subscribers to these services.
