The free Linux desktop KDE Plasma 5.19 has been released and offers not only the obligatory detail improvements but also fine optical retouching on the design of the modular user interface. However, compared to KDE Plasma 5.18 LTS, which has improved usability, there are no major functional adjustments.

Focus on detail work

The creators of the free desktop environment KDE have focused their attention on detail during the release of KDE Plasma 5.19 and given it a comprehensive facelift with new icons, avatars and wallpapers as well as optical retouching on the desktop and the user interface.

Miniprograms, control bars and menus were designed to be as uniform as individual widgets and GTK3 applications. In addition, KDE Plasma 5.19 receives new color schemes and corrects display problems with GTK2 applications.

Optimized indexing

Indexing, which speeds up desktop searches by KDE, has been further optimized and now offers more settings than with KDE Plasma 5.18 LTS. For example, hidden files can be excluded from indexing.

Improved system control

The Control Panel has also been drilled in some places and now offers even more options for fonts used, the configuration of the desktop and its resolution, as well as improved handling of Flatpak repositories in the Discover package manager.

The system information that provides information about the installed hardware and software has been completely redesigned. As always, the official release notes of the developers provide further details.

KDE Plasma 5.19 can be written and tested with KDE neon, a Linux distribution with the latest KDE build, completely risk-free as a live system on a USB disk.
